Losing Control?

Some people are afraid that they will ‘lose control’; ‘disclose secrets’ or ‘give up their power’ or 'get stuck' in hypnosis, but nothing could be further from the truth.

When hypnosis is used for therapeutic purposes, it is nothing like what you see on stage. Though you are deeply relaxed, you are aware at all times and completely in control.

What is Hypnosis?

watchesThe best way to view hypnosis is as a state of intense relaxation and concentration, in which the mind becomes remote and detached from everyday cares and concerns. In this relaxed state the subconscious part of the mind is best able to respond creatively to suggestion and imagery. It can focus on the things you wish to change and on the ways you can best do so, free from analytical or anxious thoughts.

You are, however, not asleep nor are you unconscious. You are in an altered or alternative state of consciousness in which you 'let things happen' through your subconscious mind rather than trying to make them happen with your conscious mind. Because you are deeply relaxed, the suggestions given to you by the Hypnotherapist will be acted upon more easily by the subconscious.

I think this quote I found in a book called 'Something More' by Sarah Ban Breathnach explains choice beautifully:

"Our choices can be conscious or unconscious. Conscious choice is creative, the heart of authenticity. Unconscious choice is destructive, the heel of self-abuse. Unconscious choice is how we end up living other people's lives."
